Interviews Slovakia (SVK)
The Historical and Cultural Heritage of Deaf People in Slovakia
In 2022, DeafStudio interviewed Deaf seniors in Slovakia about two historical periods:
- the Second World War and
- the occupation of the Warsaw Pact troops in 1968.
The interviews are not part of the Deaf Museums project; they were filmed for the Slovakian project: "Protection and development of historical and cultural heritage with a focus on military history", realized with the financial support of the Ministry of Defense of the Slovak Republic.
This Slovakian project is aimed at the protection and development of historical and cultural heritage in the context of war history, namely of two historical periods - the Second World War and the occupation of the Warsaw Pact troops in 1968. The information will be processed within the framework of the linguistic and cultural minority of the Deaf in Slovakia (how the Deaf experienced given period, what kind of information they had, how they participated in social events, how they evaluate this history over time) and at the same time will be primary for them as well.
We include these interviews on this page for 2 reasons:
1. These interviews are very valuable, becausse we know so little about how Deaf people experienced these periods in time in Slovakia (and in many other countries). and
2. DeafStudio is a partner in the Deaf Museums project. In many ways, the Deaf Museums project was the launching pad for the Slovakian project.

The interviews are in Slovakian sign language with Slovak subtitles. YouTube can translate the Slovak subtitles into the written language you prefer. The translations are not perfect but good enough to understand the stories.
