Video transcript
1. Can you please introduce yourself, and the people who worked on your exhibition for the Deaf Museums project?
My name is Roman from DeafStudia. Our team consists of Martin, Pavel, and myself.
2. DeafStudio made an online archive of the Gong magazine. How did you digitize the magazines? Where can people see the archive?
The Association for the Hearing Impaired used to publish magazines for the deaf community with various activities, sports, culture, and education. However, they stopped publishing them and most of the magazines were thrown in the basement or trash. We started collecting them. The scanner is specially from the university and converted the magazines into electronic format online. You can now view all the electronic magazines online.
3. You also made a physical exhibition. Can you tell us more about the physical exhibition?
What is the story that you want to tell with your exhibition?
The exhibition contains information gathered from magazines about history, culture, school, and various topics. Our team found it easy to explore different themes. We created texts and beautiful photos. The tables include 6 and 5 themes, including sports, school development, and the deaf community's struggle.
4. Is the exhibition mostly for Deaf people or for hearing people?
You have now invited 2 groups of people to visit the exhibition. Who were they and what was their feedback?
The exhibition was held for the first time at the club and many people from the deaf community came. People reminisced about the event and some even did not know about it. This is positive as they were able to exchange information about history. Many people want to see more exhibitions.
At the school, the exhibitions were even stronger because the parents of deaf children go there.
Many people did not know about the existing history and culture of the deaf community, but thanks to us they acquired this information and want to know more.
Children and juniors were amazed when they learned about these topics. They want to see more exhibitions in the future.
Some of them gave us feedback that it would be better to have less text and more photos. QR codes, videos, interviews, and activities could also be added.
5. At the start of the project, the plan was to interview some of the persons who were featured in the Gong articles and to include these interviews in your exhibition.
Why did you have to change the plans for the interviews?
Previously, we had planned to conduct camera interviews. Given the coronavirus concerns, we were afraid of finding people, especially the elderly.
Therefore, we rethought and came up with the idea that the only option was to publish the magazines for the deaf community, which would enrich the history, culture, school, sports, etc.
6. What will happen next? Are you planning new exhibitions, new activities in this field?
Our team made a first step with this exhibition. People liked it and were excited.
Our team is thinking about future exhibitions. Not only in one city, but we would also like to expand to other places, such as clubs, festivals, or the International Week of the Deaf.
7. What advice can you give people who want to do something similar? What lessons have you learned in the process?
The team has experience in presenting the history of the deaf, which was previously not well-known. They started a conversation and found that the history exists.
They thought of publishing a magazine that would showcase the history of the deaf in various areas such as sports, school, and culture.
They decided that this history must not be forgotten and it is important to preserve it. They therefore decided to continue working on this topic.
8. Anything else that you would like to add?
I would like to add that our team, along with others who helped us, gathered diverse themes and perspectives on history and discussed ways to achieve the goal of the exhibition. Another person proposed the design. We express our gratitude to all involved.
